Renovating or Adding a Bathroom: Plan the Water Pump Before Tiling

Adding a bathroom or an extension? Plan the water pump, power point and pipe route with your contractor before the tiles go down.

Renovating or Adding a Bathroom: Plan the Water Pump Before Tiling

Home renovations are usually planned around space, finishes and the materials budget. The water supply is often the last thing anyone thinks about, after the tiles are laid and the new bathroom is finished. That is when the owner finds the new shower is weak, or the old pump runs longer than it used to. If you plan to add a bathroom, build an upstairs extension or set up a wet kitchen, think about the water pump from the start. A little planning now can save breaking tiles later.

When the old pump is no longer enough

The pump fitted when the house was first occupied was chosen for the original layout. As the number of water points grows, the load on that pump changes.

More bathrooms

A house that once had two bathrooms may now have three or four. When several showers run together, the water is split across more points. A pump that used to cope now works harder, and the pressure at each point feels lower.

Bathrooms at a higher level

An upstairs extension or an attic bathroom sits closer to the level of the roof tank. Gravity water from the tank has almost no pressure at that height. A new bathroom up there will very likely need help from a pump.

Wet kitchens and extra points

A wet kitchen at the back, a garden tap for washing the car, or a relocated washing machine all add water points. One or two extra points may be fine, but combined with a new bathroom the difference starts to show.

Signs the old pump is overloaded

  • The pump keeps switching off and on again while only one tap is open.
  • The pressure in the furthest bathroom is clearly weaker than the rest.
  • The motor sounds louder, or the pump feels hot after long use.

Talk to your contractor early

A renovation contractor manages many trades. The water pump is easy to miss because it is not part of the bathroom drawings. Raise it at the first meeting.

Questions for the contractor

  • Where will the main pipe from the tank connect to the new bathroom?
  • Does the new pipe route run through walls or floors that will be tiled?
  • When is the rough plumbing scheduled, before or after the electrical work?

Sequence the work

Fitting the pump is easiest after the rough plumbing is done but before walls are closed up and tiled. If the pump goes in too late, connections may have to be made through finished surfaces, and that adds work.

Plan the pump space, power point and pipe route

Settle these three things before any tile goes down.

Space for the pump

A pump needs a flat, dry, ventilated spot with room around it so it can be checked later. A side lane, the space under an outdoor staircase or a covered back wall are common choices. Avoid tightly enclosed spaces that get hot.

Power point

The pump needs a dedicated power point close to where it sits. Ask the contractor's electrician to provide it during the house wiring. Never run the pump off a temporary lead or a shared socket. All wiring must be done by a qualified person, not by the homeowner.

Pipe route

The pump sits on the outlet pipe from the tank, before the water reaches the bathrooms. A short route with fewer bends helps pressure reach the furthest point. Photograph the pipe route before the walls are closed, for your records.

What is included and what is charged separately

Our supply and installation prices cover pump supply, installation, basic wiring and pressure and function testing. The full list by brand and HP is in the price section. Renovation work often involves things outside that, so these are charged separately and confirmed on WhatsApp before the work is done:

  • Pipe modification to connect to the new route.
  • Extra wiring if the power point is far from the pump.
  • Removing the old pump.

If you have already bought your own pump, installation only is RM800, covering basic wiring, testing and commissioning.

The Rawang, Nilai and Batu Pahat pages describe homes in those areas, and the schedule for your town is confirmed on WhatsApp. Send a simple floor plan or photos of the renovation site, the tank and any existing pump, then message us for an HP recommendation.
